Lucia deLeiris paints from direct observation, inspired by the unique light effects of the moment. She interprets the natural world, the landscape and the figure in both oil and watercolor.
Lucia deLeiris began drawing in early childhood, growing up in a family of several generations of artists. Originally trained in zoology and scientific illustration, she began her career illustrating books and magazines, before branching out into painting landscapes on location, wildlife, and the figure. She studied painting with Craig Srebnik and Don Demers, as well as independently. The Amazon, Africa, and the polar regions, in particular, are among the many locations where she has painted.
Lucia has been awarded three grants by the National Science Foundation to paint in Antarctica through their artist and writers program, living at science stations and in remote field camps on the sea ice.
Her work has appeared in books, juried shows, and in numerous solo shows in museums and galleries.
