We are pleased to be offering free workshops, demonstrations, artists talks, and performances from 12:30-5pm both days during Waltham Mills Open Studios.

12:30 Slowing Looking Down with Pat Mattina
Your eyes, and what you know, will be working for you as you visit with a single painting in the studio. Prompts will be provided beforehand.

1:00 Oil Painting demonstration with Viktor Butko  (Saturday only)

An hour long demonstration of representational still life painting.

1:00 Japanese (Kumihimo) Braiding on a Takadai with Lyn Christiansen

An introduction to the ancient art of interlacings or braiding. Lyn will talk about the anthropology and history, and demonstrate braiding on the advanced Japanese stand called a “takadai.”

2:00 Collage Demonstration with Michele Vitti  (Saturday only)

2:00 Trying on History (Sunday only)

Join The Costume Company as we journey to colonial America! Come try on period accurate costumes and learn a little bit about how colonial families dressed. Make sure to bring your cameras!

John Thompson and guest artists from MassArt will provide an interactive demonstration on various printmaking techniques.

3:00 Make Animation without a Camera with AgX Film Collective

AgX is dedicated to filmmaking on film. By drawing, coloring, stamping, lettering, or stickering, anyone can contribute to a 16mm film that will be transferred to video. Animation principles will be introduced and free play is encouraged. Children invited, accompanied by an adult.

3:30 Water and City Reflection talk with Suzanne Hodes

4:00 From Travel Sketches and Photos to Finished Painting, a Talk with Michael Wilson  (Saturday only)

Michael will discuss how travel sketches and photos are used to create finished paintings.  This talk is inspired by a recent trip to Southern France. 144 Moody St., Building 4, 2nd floor, Studio 11

4:00 Forest of Collective Thought with Sarah Leon

Participants will join in a drawing exercise inspired by the writing game called “Exquisite Corpse.” Sarah will also talk about the recurring theme of nature, and the surreal in her work.

4:30 Line Shaft Machinery demonstration with Todd Cahill

A demonstration of line-shaft driven antique machinery with power transmission similar to the kind used at the Francis Cabot Lowell Mill.

Drop in Art Activities, 12 to 6pm

Collaborative Wings a participatory art installation comprised of over 300 “feathers” each one celebrating diversity and inclusion in our community.  Visitors are invited to create their own “feather.”

Community exhibit with McDevitt Art Club and Opportunities for Inclusion
Opportunities for Inclusion serves people of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families in the community. 
McSketchIt is an after-school art club for 6–8th grade students from McDevitt Middle School in Waltham.
